This position is located at the University Services Building, 1551
S. Rural Road, Tempe, AZ (on Rural Road south of Apache Blvd).
Must pass pre-employment physical examination post-offer of
employment to include audiogram, asbestos worker clearance,
respiratory clearance questionnaire, and respiratory fit test.
Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D)
upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of
employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving
record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39-month
period from date of hire.

Job Description:
Facilities Development and Management is seeking a Welder Lead to
perform complex and precision welding techniques in the design,
fabrication, joining, and repair of metals and maintain welding
equipment. This position may coordinate the work activities of less
experienced trades personnel performing welding activities
CLOSE: 04/30/2025
Essential Duties:
Design, fabricate, join, and/or repair metals, using
oxygen-acetylene, electric arc, MIG, and TIG welding
techniques.
Weld in controlled atmospheres, plasma welds, and cuts.
Heat, treat, and thermos pray equipment, fixtures, and various
types of metal objects and structures.
Operate drill presses, power saws, grinders, positioners, and a
variety of welding equipment and hand tools.
Must be proficient in reading a tape measure, layout, cutting,
welding, grinding, finding angles, and finishing material.
Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in
various positions (vertical, horizontal, or overhead)
Analyze plans, drawings, work samples, specifications, and work
orders to determine work requirements, sequence of welding
assignments, and personnel needs.
Estimate material and labor needs on jobs.
Maintain architectural railing, gates, fencing, and light
structural steel.
Performs cutting, welding, and fabricating on pipe, corrugated
metal pipe, catch basin grates, and protection bars as related to
storm drain maintenance and flood control.
Performs cutting, welding, and fabricating on structural grade pipe
in the installation of barricades, light poles, and street sign
posts.
Fabricates and performs cutting, welding, brazing, and silver
soldering as required to repair, rebuild, and modify equipment such
as utility carts, utility trailers, and vehicle work racks.
Manage welding supply and material needs.
Coordinate activities of employees in the welding area.
Perform basic non-destructive inspection techniques.
Strong attention to detail with a focus on quality workmanship.
Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently
or as part of a team.
Commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
Maintain accurate records and files.
Clearly communicate to perform essential functions of the job.
DAYS & SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 6:30AM - 3:00PM
Salary Range: $25 to $35 per hour (DOE). ASU offers a comprehensive
benefits package with the State of Arizona.
Desired Qualifications:
Seven (7) years of welding experience in fabrication and
maintenance; OR completion of a recognized two-year welding
training program or apprenticeship plus five (5) years of
experience; OR any equivalent combination of education, training,
and welding experience.
AWS Certified Welder certification (or similar) required, or
ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
Preferred qualifications include experience in a lead or
senior-level welding role, including mentoring or directing other
staff.
Experience in:
Proficiency in welding processes (MIG, TIG, stick), welding
inspection techniques, and relevant industry standards (AWS,
ASME).
Seeing a project to completion.
The fabrication, joining, and repair of a variety of metal objects,
equipment, fixtures, and structures.
Heat treating and thermos praying.
Knowledge of:
Applicable codes.
Welding techniques (oxygen-acetylene, electric arc, MIG, TIG,
controlled atmosphere, and plasma cutting), tools and
equipment.
Non-destructive inspection techniques.
Using computers (e.g., Microsoft Office, Outlook calendar and
email)
Using work order systems (e.g. WebTMA)
Evidence of:
Welding certifications such as CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) or
CWE (Certified Welding Educator) are preferred.
Effective communication skills.
Working Environment:
May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and
equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific
process to be followed, and may include the use of Personal
Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g. safety glasses, hearing
protection, negative pressure and positive pressure respirator).
Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.
Climb stairs and ladder.
Travel throughout campus. Work in extreme temperatures, inadequate
lighting, confined spaces (tunnels, manholes, vaults), intense
noise, dirty environment, air contamination, and hazardous
materials.
Lift, bend, and carry heavy objects up to 75 pounds. Ability to
push and/or pull approximately 200-300 pound maintenance carts to
transport tools and equipment throughout campus to job site. Work
from ladders 6' to 30' using power tools to repair/install
telecommunication/data cable.
Drive University vehicles/carts
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience appropriate to
the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of
experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills
and abilities have been achieved.
